RCA and Tour FAQ’s
*If I take a tour, is my child guaranteed a spot at RCA? Unfortunately we cannot guarantee any spots at RCA. Priority is given to rising sophomores and juniors who will be able to complete a pathway. We also schedule students based on a first-come first-served basis. This is why it is important to attend our Open House or a tour early in the semester. If interest in a pathway exceeds the number of available spots, names will be placed into a lottery system.
Are there any entrance requirements for RCA? No! Students can register for any RCA pathway that interests them. Our only requirement is that you and your child have an interest card signed by their pathway of choice’s teacher.
Are there any fees to attend RCA? Some pathways require a fee for items such as a uniform (scrubs, chef’s uniform, etc.)
What should I bring to the tour? Wear comfortable shoes! Our tour takes about an hour to complete-we have that many amazing programs! We will provide you with an interest form to complete so your child can request their pathway of interest.
What are the next steps to register my child for RCA? We will provide you with an interest form during the tour that must be signed by your child’s chosen pathway teacher or representative. Your child should check that they are interested in RCA when they fill out their registration form during advisement.
Why do I need to take a tour? In order to give you the best information about our programs, we want you and your child to hear about the programs directly from the pathway teachers or representative. After your tour the teacher or representative will sign your interest card and you are one step closer to registering for RCA!
Who will be leading the tour? We have a wonderful group of Student Ambassadors who will lead you around the school and answer questions along the way! They are a great resource for students on a tour because they are current RCA students. Our counselors, career center coordinator, and other wonderful staff will also lead the tours when our Ambassadors are not available.
How will my student get to RCA if they attend next year? RCPS provides transportation to and from RCA from all three high schools. Your child may take some of their core classes at RCA so they do not have to travel back and forth throughout the day. If your student drives to school, they will be permitted to drive to RCA as well.
Can rising 9th grade students attend RCA? Some pathways accept 9th grade students and some do not. If your child is currently in 8th grade, please ask the pathway teacher during the tour if they accept 9th grade students.
When will I be notified that my child will be attending RCA? We will NOT notify students individually regarding this decision. RCA courses will be listed on your child’s schedule for the upcoming year.
Can my child take more than one pathway? Some students are able to accommodate more than one pathway in their schedule. It depends on the student’s schedule and the schedule of RCA courses.
